We welcome your interest in our Confederate Civil War military / civilian reenactment group. We make every effort to be historically accurate in our impressions with our uniforms, civilian wear, equipment, and camp life. As with any organization, we have a few
guidelines and rules to help with the enjoyment and safety of your new hobby: reenacting the American Civil War.

It would be our absolute pleasure to help you get started, but please be aware that we DO NOT want you to spend any money until you know this is for you. All you need right now is a desire to learn, a willingness to educate the public on this era in our nation’s history, and free time on the weekends of April through October. We average about two events a month. Very few are able to attend every event. No previous military experience is required.

In order for you to “try before you buy,” we may be able to suit you up for a weekend; however, you need to notify us at least two weeks in advance. We, the entire unit, were once in your shoes. We understand what you are going through as a "fresh fish," so we're offering the following answers to frequently asked questions.

How do I get started?
Well, you’ve already taken the first step. Contact any 17th Mississippi member to arrange your first event. You will need to attend two full weekend events before your
membership is considered.

What does it cost to
“try it out”?

Not much: your travel expenses, food for the weekend, and a small dollar amount for gunpowder and percussion caps. We do not have company tents, so sleeping / camping arrangements are needed in advance. Now here is the sensitive part: money. We give a soldier one calendar year to acquire all the necessary equipment. Used equipment is sometimes available. New is readily available. PLEASE check with us before you buy anything. We’re here to help you get what you need. In your 1st year, you will most likely spend anywhere from $1,000 to $1,200. After this initial investment, most of your expense will consist of powder, caps, and equipment maintenance. Dues may be a part of your annual expenses in the future. Extras could include: a tent, cooking gear, or cots. These can be acquired in the 2nd or 3rd year, but at your discretion.

What will I be expected to do at the event?
As a potential soldier, you will be assigned to a non-commissioned officer, or NCO. Your NCO will be responsible for your well-being and safety. He will instruct you in the school of the soldier including the manual of arms that you will need to know. Your personal safety and ours are top priority! You will be expected to follow any reasonable instructions given to you by an NCO or officer during drill,

skirmish, or battle. You will be treated as a member of the unit in all respects, which means you are expected to participate in any drills, skirmishes, or battles, and to help with any camp duties as required, i.e., firewood runs, water runs, etc. You will also have plenty of free time to relax, ask questions, talk with spectators, and participate in other activities at the event.

Is there anything I need to bring myself?
Yes, you will need a quilt or one or two wool blankets if you plan to camp. You may use any modern bedding might need, but you must keep these out of sight during the day when the public is in and around camp. Again, we have no company tents, so arrangements for tent sharing need to be made in advance. You may also want to bring eating utensils, a cup, and a plate. You are responsible for your own food unless otherwise arranged. A chair may also be nice to have.

How do I join the military?
